Jimmy Spithill is known to be a helmsman as well as skipper of the Australian crew and is known for his competitive nature.
He has recently expressed his interest to take part in the PIC Insurance Coastal Classic race. The chance comes to him on October 20th
when he would be racing with Frank Racing on the Orma 60 trimaran.
His career is not without controversy as his sailing with Kiwi members has been all but smooth sailing. He has definitely been a controversial yachtie of Australian origin. However, now that he had set his mind to it, he would be sailing with a Kiwi crew on a New Zealand boat that would be racing up the east coast of Northland. Spithill has proven his skills and abilities when he won the America’s Cup twice, once being part of the Oracle Team USA in the year 2013 while the other time it was for BMW Oracle Racing in the year 2010. The Emirates Team New Zealand has been having a good time of it at the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.
Peter Burling and his team have been going well in Bermuda and were competing against arch rival Land Rover BAR team from Great Britain in the second Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoff Semi-Final race. A mistake by Peter Burling and his team saw the Emirates New Zealand boat capsize.
The boat dug its nose deep in the water and its stern got lifted. This made the boat capsize. Three of the team members were seen clinging on in the cockpit and three others were elected into the water. There was no serious damage to all the six sailors and very safe and unharmed. The boat was taken back to the America’s Cup village.
This was not a good day for the Kiwi team as they had to return to the base even before the first race to fit a spare wing sail. There was some problem with the wing sail and the whole team had to wade off through some anxious moments to get the wing sail set up on the boat in time to take part in the first race. One of the regular regattas that are held every year is the Volvo Ocean Race. The course for this race is a regular one but it is slated to undergo revision for the 2017-18 version. It will include a stopover in Australia that is a first in a decade of races that have been held under this series.
The change of the route of this year’s event was announced on 17th February in Melbourne. This will see the race stopping in Australia, which would be the eighth time that this country is being included in this ocean race. The stopover would be a compressed one whereby Melbourne would be the stopover destination that comes with the race route between Hong Kong and Cape Town. Last year the Superyacht racing association declared that a Corinthian Spirit Class would be included in the 2017 regatta events that it would host.
There would be certain factors that would define this class of regatta events. For instance, yachts that participate in this class can have a more relaxed approach when it comes to racing. The competition would be reduced as well as to lower costs of entry. The reaction was positive and this class or category of events is something to look forward to this year.
In general super yacht category of regattas has always been about who is the loudest or can affording more expensive technology than the spirit of competition and sailing prowess. It also meant that only a small percentage of yacht owners participated in such events. Continue reading
If one has to see the true spirit of sailing then nothing is more spectacular than sailing championship organized in the United States for disabled people.
The championship is organized by the Clearwater sailing center community and the name of the event is U.S. disabled sailing championship. The tournament is going to happen between November 18 to 20 and it will feature 12 sailors of 2.4mR, they will race in action of singlehanded. Many are expecting this event as remarkable as this event will embody true spirit of a sailor.
United State holds this championship every year and this is one of the oldest championship made for disabled sailors. The participants in championship remain disabled sailors that have been the part of Paralympic, members of United States sailing teams both old and new. The 2017 Festival of Sails will be a totally different affair and one that you have not seen so far. The event, presented by none other than Rex Gorell Land Rover, will feature new additions like the Trailable boat series and Off the Beach series. The main event of the Festival of Sails, the regatta will be conducted from 21 January to 24 January in 2017.
The new dates for the event will prevent a clash of dates with the popular Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race that is drawing more crowds to the Surf Coast region. This festival will start just after the Rolex Sydney Hobart that takes place in early January and this will give the chance for some of the boats heading north to take part in the event.
The preliminary racing schedule is out now and there would be fourteen divisions. The list includes multihulls, sport boats, S80 plus and Sydney 38 one-designs. The management is looking at organizing a separate series of classic yachts, if they can pull in enough participation.
The race officer Denis Thompson is expecting the classic yachts to make its presence felt in the Festival of Sails as the biennial Australian Wooden Boat Festival is to kick start in February 2017. The race officer also expects the two new series, OTP and trailable boats to be a big hit among the fans. This program starts on 25 January and will conclude on the 27th January.
There will also be a separate Grand Prix series to take place outside of the festival for the high ranking IRC yachts. This could become a reality as most of the owners are game to stay on within the important dates. Matters are made simple by the Royal Geelong Yacht Club for owners looking for crew and crews looking for boats by offering a crew match database to hook the two together.
